The ARMORY SHOW is the American incarnation of the original Basel VOLTA show, which was founded in 2005 by three art dealers as a fair "by galleries, for galleries". This year The Armory featured eight special projects, curated by Julia Grosse and Yvette Mutumba, that brought together a group of emerging artists from Africa and the Diaspora, providing a glimpse of a generation of young artists that are challenging preconceptions surrounding the notion of “contemporary African art". 

 

The sheer scale of the Armory Show is a lot to digest. So many galleries. So many more artists. But how to navigate one of the largest displays of art in the city in a short span of time? The solution is simple enough, don't even try. We decided it was best to just stay calm, pick our battles, and stay focused. It's best to stay away from large crowds (there isn't always wisdom in crowds). We asked a few gallerists how they navigate such large masses of art and people and the consensus was this; focuse and keep an eye out for that unique voice that stands out from the crush.

 

We chose to pare down and focus on the contemporary section of the Armory Show (Pier 94) and look for photographic art that stood out from the rest. Our finds are above. Enjoy.
