When an Artwork Disappears
July 2026
Three physical artworks. Nine writers. Zero photos.
Inspired by Sei Smith’s The Painting's Journey, this project explores what happens when we strip away the visual record of art. Three original works were sent into the world in secret, passing through a sequence of writers who each lived with a hidden piece for nearly a month—translating its physical presence into prose.
Now, the art is gone, returned to the artists' studios. All that remains are these texts.

Before & After
June 12 - July 31, 2025
This exhibition, conceived under the "OPEN CALL: Art Exchange and Collaboration" rubric, instigates a deliberate disruption of artistic autonomy, a direct intervention into the myth of singular creative sovereignty. Soliciting "finished" works only to subject them to another's transformative hand deconstructs the trajectory from solitary conception to singular execution. The artwork, no longer inviolable, becomes mutable, a provisional statement awaiting dialogic re-articulation within this art project in circulation. This unsettles the ingrained practice of singular authorship and its attendant creative intention, echoing the spirit of artistic movements that challenged traditional norms.

This unsettles the ingrained practice of singular authorship and its attendant creative intention, echoing the spirit of artistic movements that challenged traditional norms.

the Portrait

"Now let's define great portraiture. It makes companionable for you a person who is identified or unknown, perhaps remote from you in geography or time (even dead, no matter), different from you in ways big or small, a lot or only the littlest bit like you in other ways, and, all in all, another exceedingly specific inhabitant of a certain planet, amid everything that cannot help but be." - Peter Schjeldahl.
